The oldest and most valuable amber is found in the Baltic Sea area. It is usually a darker golden brown with insect and leaf inclusions. A large amount of amber available commercially now comes from the Dominican Republic. Amber found in the United States is often very pale yellow or medium brown. There is also butterscotch amber, black amber and green amber.
Amber is so soft that it can be polished by hand using a fine grit
sandpaper or even toothpaste. Do not attempt to polish old amber
without first consulting a jeweler or lapidary though because it
is possible to devalue the piece using these methods. More
